Week 22

Week 22

Solomon's wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the men of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than any other man, including Ethan the Ezrahite-wiser than Heman, Calcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. (1 Kings 4:30-32)

This week we finish the love poem known as the book of the Song of Solomon. It is said that Jewish boys were forbidden to read this book until they were 13 because of the passion and sensuality. Whether or not that is factual, the Song of Solomon is used as the template for godly relationship between man and woman, husband and wife. There is also substantial Messianic references and foreshadows within the story, which I would love for my more learned brothers here to point out and discuss.

These weeks we spend in Proverbs would be a fantastic time for each of us to post a proverb or twenty that speaks directly to us, and explain why.

I'd like to start with one from Proverbs chapter 2.

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:1-5)

How much time do we spend seeking for "treasure" in this world. Perhaps it is knowledge of a hobby or occupation make us more capable. Perhaps it is literally to gain more and more money. If we spent as much time and effort seeking out God and His wisdom and understanding, what giant people of faith we would be!

But notice, the effort isn't soley our solo attempts. Solomon states "call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding."

God wants us to ever learn more about Him. To do so, we must ask to receive, and seek fervently. Our requested desire and our whole-hearted seeking will not go unanswered and unrewarded.

Jesus tells us:
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7, Luke 11:9)

James reiterates in his letter:
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5)

I confess that I do not see Him nearly as much as I should. My desire is to learn more of God and His ways, but my dedication often suffers from other selfish desires. This is one reason why accountability is so important.

As an unrelated subject, I just have to point this one out. One of the best proverbs has to be Proverb 11:22 -
Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.

Peace!
